The visa, explained simply

What is the Spain Digital Nomad Visa?

Launched in January 2023, the Digital Nomad Visa lets non-EU remote workers live legally in Spain while continuing to work for their foreign employer or clients. It's not a tourist visa loophole, it's a fully recognized residency authorization.

Unlike similar visas in Portugal or Greece, the Spain DNV allows up to 20% of income from Spanish clients, includes full Schengen mobility, and offers a clear path toward permanent residency. Spain is currently ranked the #1 digital nomad destination globally.

The application is document-heavy and increasingly scrutinized since late 2024, especially for freelancers and business owners. One wrong apostille or missing translation is enough to get rejected. Getting it right the first time matters.

The DNV was designed for a specific profile. Here's who we most commonly help.

💻

Remote Employees

You have a full-time role with a foreign company and your employer supports remote work from Spain. American employees benefit from the US–Spain bilateral social security agreement.

Lowest complexity
🧑‍💼

Freelancers & Contractors

You work with foreign clients with at least 3 months of contract history. How you present your income structure matters — we'll make sure it's done the way consulates want to see it.

Medium complexity
🏢

Business Owners

You run a foreign company and draw salary or distributions. The highest-risk profile since 2024. We have specific experience structuring these applications to avoid rejection on circular ownership grounds.

Highest scrutiny

Common questions

Things you probably want to know first.

How long does the DNV process take?

Typically 2–3 months from eligibility check to approval. We recommend starting at least 3 months before your planned move date.

Can I apply if I'm self-employed or run my own company?

Yes, but this is the profile that requires the most careful preparation. Since late 2024, consulates have increased scrutiny on business owners with circular ownership structures. We have specific experience navigating these cases.

Do I need to already be in Spain to apply?

No. You can apply via your local Spanish consulate from your home country. For the 3-year version, you can apply in-country. We help with both routes.

Can I bring my family?

Yes. Spouses and dependent children can be included. Our Couple pricing covers a primary applicant plus one dependent. Additional dependents are +€290 each.

What if my income fluctuates month to month?

Consulates look at your average over the past 12 months. We review your numbers on the eligibility call and advise whether now is the right moment to apply or whether to wait.

What's the difference between the DNV and the Non-Lucrative Visa?

The DNV is for people who actively work remotely. The Non-Lucrative Visa is for people who don't need to work — retirees or those with significant passive income. The Golden Visa ended in April 2025, so the NLV is now the main alternative. We'll tell you which fits in the first 10 minutes of your call.
